Karoline Strys is a freelancing artist working on the shore of dance, performance, voice and word. She studied comparative literature, arts and philosophy in Frankfurt before she enrolled in the BA for Dance at the Center for Contemporary Dance at Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. Since then she had been collaborating as a dancer with choreographers such as Omar Rajeh, Reut Shemesh, Maria Golding, Özlem Alkis, Dwayne Holliday and Stephanie Thiersch.

Deriving from a theoretical background her own work is marked by a philosophical perspective that is permanently engaged in the complexity of a possible translation or transcription into and out of the body, as for instance in the installation performance "On Deconstructing the Body" in between language and dance or via a musical composition technique transferred as a movement pattern into space as in "A Solo for Two" that had been developped in collaboration with Valérie Kommer and presented during a summer residency at DOCH, Stockholm, in the frame of MADE IN KÖLN at Orangerie - Theater im Volksgarten e.V. and at Tanzhaus NRW in Düsseldorf. In 2016 she was a guest student for Applied Voice Anthropology at the UdK Berlin and went for a stagière-program to Montréal, Canada where she worked with Paul-André Fortier amongst others. Currently, she is working with the voice anthropologist Ulrike Sowodniok on the research project "Gesumms", an investigation on sound, movement and the specificity of listening.

In close collaboration with Bryce Kasson she is organizing and teaching a regular Contact Improvisation Workshop and Jam at Tanzfaktur in Cologne since 2017. She is the co-founder of the make a move collective that mingles contemporary dance and parkour in site specific performance situations. Further, she is also working as a freelancing translator and editor.

Karoline Strys ist freischaffende Künstlerin an der Schwelle von Tanz, Performance, Stimme und Wort. Sie studierte zunächst Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft, Kunstgeschichte und Philosophie in Frankfurt am Main und anschließend Bühnentanz am Zentrum für Zeitgenössischen Tanz der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Köln. Seitdem kollaborierte sie als Tänzerin mit Choreographen wie Omar Rajeh, Reut Shemesh, Maria Golding, Özlem Alkis, Dwayne Holliday und Stephanie Thiersch. Ihre eigenen Arbeiten sind geprägt von einer philosophischen Perspektive, die sich auseinandersetzt mit der Komplexität einer möglichen Übersetzbarkeit und Übertragung in und aus dem Körper heraus; so etwa in der Installationsperformance „On Deconstructing the Body“ zwischen Sprache und Tanz oder mittels einer musikalischen Kompositionstechnik in den Raum hinein wie in „A Solo for Two“, das in Kollaboration mit Valérie Kommer entstand und innerhalb einer Sommerresidenz am DOCH in Stockholm präsentiert wurde sowie im Rahmen von MADE IN KÖLN und im Tanzhaus NRW gezeigt wurde. 2016 besuchte sie als Gast ein Seminar zur Angewandten Stimmanthropologie an der UdK in Berlin und ging für ein Stagièrenprogramm nach Montréal, Kanada, wo sie im Rahmen von Transformation Danse u.a. mit Paul-André Fortier arbeiten konnte. Zurzeit arbeitet sie mit der Stimmanthropologin Ulrike Sowodniok an dem Rechercheprojekt "Gesumms", eine Untersuchung zu Klang, Bewegung und zur Spezifität des Hörens.

In enger Zusammenarbeit mit Bryce Kasson organisiert und leitet sie seit 2017 regelmäßig Contact Improvisation Workshops und Jams in der Tanzfaktur in Köln. Sie ist Mitbegründerin des make a move collective, das sich in ortspezifischen Performances mittels der Verknüpfung von Zeitgenössischem Tanz und Parkour damit auseinandersetzt, wie sich der Blick für unsere nähere Umgebung und den Stadtraum öffnen lässt. Außerdem ist sie als freischaffende Übersetzerin und Lektorin tätig.
